   Potassium monopersulfate is an inorganic acidic oxidant, also known as potassium monopersulfate compound, potassium monopersulfate triple salt or potassium peroxymonopersulfate. Its English names are Oxone, potassium monopersulfate compound, potassium monopersulfate triple salt or potassium peroxymonopersulfate. Abbreviation: PMPS or KMPS. It is the basic active component of commonly used functional chemicals such as Oxone, Caroat, ZA200/100 and Basolan2448.

Physical Properties: It is a free-flowing white powdery solid, readily soluble in water. At 20℃ (68°F), its water solubility is greater than 250g/L. Bulk density ranges from 1.1 to 1.5 g/cm³.

Chemical Properties: The active substance of potassium monopersulfate compound is potassium monopersulfate (KHSO₅, also called potassium peroxymonosulfate). It has extremely strong and effective non-chlorine oxidation capacity, and its usage and disposal processes meet safety and environmental protection requirements, thus being widely applied in industrial production and consumer fields. It is relatively stable under normal conditions, but tends to decompose when the temperature exceeds 65℃. It is highly reactive and can participate in various chemical reactions, serving as an oxidant, bleaching agent, catalyst, disinfectant, etchant and so on.

Application Description

 Pharmaceutical/Chemical Synthesis

It is the basic raw material for preparing a series of dioxirane catalysts such as DMD and TFD. With mild reaction conditions, high oxidation activity and excellent selectivity, dioxiranes have opened up new pathways for asymmetric reactions and natural drug synthesis. In the design of asymmetric reaction catalysts for alkenes, it can in-situ oxidize chiral amines and chiral iminium salts. It also serves as a polymerization initiator for the polymerization of vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile, as well as for the polymerization of vinyl monomers; it can be used as adhesives and conditioning agents.

Typical Application Cases

Studies in the field of organic synthesis have shown that PMPS can react with many organic substances in aqueous solution or solvent-aqueous solution. For example:
• According to the Elbs persulfate oxidation method, it oxidizes phenols to quinones and cyclic ketones to lactones.
• Aqueous PMPS solution can oxidize toluene to benzoic acid and diphenylmethane to benzophenone. In these reactions, the reaction mixture must be stirred and heated to reflux due to the immiscibility of the aqueous layer and the organic layer.
• Pyridine can be oxidized to pyridine N-oxide by the mixture of PMPS and glacial acetic acid, and primary arylamines are oxidized to nitroso compounds.
• Heating a mixture of PMPS with NaCl or NaBr can convert toluene to halotoluene, which is a very typical reaction. Compared with traditional persulfates, it has higher oxidation efficiency, milder process, and better yield and product quality.
• Under specific solvent conditions, alkenes are oxidized to glycerol or glycerides, and cyclohexene is preferentially oxidized to trans-cyclohexanediol. No epoxides are precipitated in the PMPS/alkene reaction system.

Example of the Reaction Between PMPS and Alkenes
  Research and literature have shown that in the study of organocatalytic asymmetric epoxidation of alkenes, PMPS can be used as an in-situ reaction oxidant and catalyst to obtain chiral catalysts—chiral iminium salts and chiral ketones, and it is an important basic oxidant for preparing certain chiral sensors. This is because the oxidation potential of PMPS is moderate.
  Compared with transition metal complex catalysts, PMPS does not contain transition metals, especially heavy metals, so it has important application value for many pharmaceuticals.
• Initiator for Polymerization Reactions
PMPS can be used as an initiator for some free radical-initiated polymerization reactions, such as the polymerization of vinyl acetate, ethyl acrylate and acrylonitrile. It can also serve as an initiator for the polymerization of vinyl monomers. (Gansu Chemical Industry, Issue 3, 2001; Pakistan Journal of Science, 1980, 32, 3-4, 201)
  Utilizing this property, it can also be applied in polymer-containing wastewater treatment as an effective component of special flocculants, such as the treatment of acrylic acid-containing wastewater in building materials factories.
